The Real Reason These Sci-Fi Movies Never Got Sequels

To state the obvious, movies are expensive to make. So Hollywood rarely takes chances on projects that aren't essentially a sure thing. That explains why sequels to already-successful movies are so common, particularly when it comes to the sci-fi genre. A lot of the marketing heavy lifting has already been done by the previous movies, and fans can rely on seeing their favorite characters return.
But not all sequels are a guaranteed success, and some just plain aren't happening. Maybe the last franchise entry turned out to be a flop, rights issues gummed up production, cast members moved on, or a script just never came together. Here are the real reasons these sci-fi movies never got sequels.

Star trek generations is not a reboot, its a sequel. And the cast of the original series have already passed the torch to the new cast in 1987, because the next generations tv series has been started that time. Maybe the abrams films cannot be called a reboot, they are also sequels, I think. Sadly I think they are not sci-fi anymore. They are action movies without any moral questions. :(

I thought John Carter was super awesome! Loved that he was played at having Superman strength. Also combination of flying machines, swords, and alien guns is basically a better version of the sequel Star Wars movies. My dad and I rewatch the movie plenty of times, he was a big fan as a kid. I'm noticing a lot of people are commenting about this movie.

Battlefield Earth is truly about the worst film I have seen. I like Sci-Fy even the old trashy stuff. Just not this turd of a film. Also I thought that before hearing about the scientology stuff. I happyily watch Tom Cruz stuff since I don't care about his real life and he is a real creep.

Can't believe what I just heard they were thinking of doing to the lovable ET. Let's take a heartwarming story of friendship between a boy and his weird extraterrestrial friend, and turn it into a horror flick. Sure - makes sense - NOT.

I suspect the reason that John Carpenter flopped was the way it was marketed. It was, and still is, an amazingly entertaining movie. Excellent, even. But it got very little in the way of publicity - Disney simply did not know what to do with it. For shame.

Disney may have spent $100 million on advertising…but that was ALL way ahead of the release. As the release date drew close they dumped advertising even though they were planning on John Carter being a tent pole property. Why? Because they bought Star Wars. John Carter may not have faired well with critics, but EVERY person I’ve ever come across that has seen the movie loves it and wants more!

Disney may have _billed_ John Carter $100M for promotion, but they did not _spend_ $100M promoting it. Fees like this are how the studio extracts money from a movie without having to pay anyone they might have promised profit shares to.

Like many others I, too, liked John Carter, thought it was done well. But the movie I'd really like to see a sequel (or two) for is Alita: Battle Angel, which I'd been waiting for since the late 90s. Wrong, John Carter is a well-known book and series by ERB. It has a large following with Hollywood trying to make this movie for multiple decades. Unfortunately, they never had the right technology to film it correctly until the last 10 years. The movie bombed for many reasons, but it was not because it was an obscure series of books. Probably more people have read John Carter of Mars and than those who knew who the Black Panther was and we all know how popular Black Panther was. Just about every fantasy/Scfi story made is a derivative of this book and series. It is like complaining about Romeo and Juliet as nothing new because there have been numerous books, movies and plays that have use the same ideas.

John carter was screwed by the marketing people, Disney were in the middle of purchasing a little known franchise called Star wars when it came out so they didn't put any effort into promoting it, it felt like they were using it as a backup plan if the deal had fallen through

Sorry, but box office revenues were *not* the reason there was no sequel to ST:Nemesis. The real reason was that there was _never_ going to be a sequel. If you had looked beyond the box office and actually watched the movie, you would have seen that the end of the franchise was baked into the story: no more Data, Riker and Troi moving on... the end of the crew was in the script. Pity it was such a PoS movie. The TNG crew deserved a better send-off, like STVI:TUC for the TOS crew.
